Enterprise Search Summit New York May 14-16 2007

Information Today will host its popular Enterprise Search Summit in New York City running May 14 thru May 16, 2007. This show has been a great way to meet vendors, hear industry luminaries speak, and talk with people in companies large and small who are trying to solve issues with search. And for the first time, Dr. Search and his search-care professionals will be at ESS 2007. New Idea Engineering may be able to provide tickets to our subscribers at a discount; if you are interested, please let us know. InfoToday also announced plans to host Enterprise Search West Coast in San Jose California in the fall.

New Enterprise Search report from Information Today

You can purchase a new report, written for Information Today by Jean Bradford of Shore Communications, starting today. Open source framework for result federation and clustering

There is a new open source framework for search federation and result clustering. Carrot2 claims to provide an architecture for acquiring search results from a number of sources, clustering the results, and visualizing the clusters. A company has formed to provide consulting services and a commercialized version of the software. We’ll be taking a look at this new interesting tool over the coming months to see what it can do.

IDC and EMC report on the growth of digital content

Digital content continues to grow. New Idea Engineering’s Mark Bennett has long maintained that data in the enterprise long ago outgrew the internet of the 1990s, but IDC now has released a study that confirms his beliefs. Thanks to Alex Barnett’s blog, we see that IDC and EMC report that digital content will grow from 161 exabytes now to over 988 exabytes by 2010 (Note: an exabyte is one million gigabytes). The survey quotes Chevron’s CIO as saying they accumulate 2 terabytes of digital content each day. Download the free IDC white paper for yourself.

FAST Forward Conference becoming an industry event.

FASTForward07, held in February in San Diego, is well on its way to becoming an industry event. Even if you don’t use FAST’s software, we’d suggest you consider attending the conference next year. This year’s event featured talks by Andrew McAfee from Harvard, Chris Anderson of Wired Magazine, and publishers Tim O’Reilly and John Battelle. Among the attendees were Dave Weinberger of MIT and Sue Feldman of IDC. We suggest you subscribe to their blog to keep updated on industry trends in Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0. Of course, you’ll follow our Enterprise Search blog to stay up to date on Search 2.0 in the Enterprise!
