Editor of NIE Enterprise Search Newsletter

Welcome to the December 2006 edition of Enterprise Search, a free subscription-based newsletter that addresses the technical obstacles that challenge webmasters, engineers, IT Professionals, and content owners as they implement search technology in corporations and organizations. Enterprise Search is published by New Idea Engineering at 5255 Stevens Creek Blvd. #189, Santa Clara, California 95051. I've provided information on subscribing and unsubscribing at the end of this newsletter.

Happy Holidays from New Idea Engineering

The holiday season is often a quiet one for Enterprise Search, but this year seems to be an exception. Big announcements from IBM and Yahoo, a new internet search site interface - apparently from Microsoft, and FAST announces their next user conference in February.

As always, feel free to contact us if you have any questions regarding enterprise search.

What's New - December 2006: Microsoft and a new web interface; IBM and Yahoo find a way to compete with Google; Google files a patent on their result list layout; FASTforward '07 in San Diego in February; and a search site claims to know what you mean. [More].

Part 3: Enterprise Security Requirements - Implementing the system: In this final installment in his series on integrating corporate security policies with Enterprise Search, Mark Bennett writes about the issues that can come up when things don't go as planned and provides a "head's up" on what to look out for earlier in the process. In the process, he provides a brief discussion of federated search, and shows how highlighted document links and navigators may be security holes unless handled properly.[More].

Federated Search Overview: Lance Danbe of Deep Web Technologies provides an overview of federated search and how companies can use it as a tool to assist employees whose job often requires them to find the most relevant documents from a variety of sources, not all of which can be indexed as part of the default corporate collection. His article also links to a location on the Deep Web site where you can test drive their federated product.[More].

Dr. Search: FAST Installation Issues: This month Dr. Search tackles a problem a reader had with a recent FAST installation. [More].
