Spring has arrived in Silicon Valley! The rains have stopped, the hills are green, the Sharks
are in the playoffs, and life is good. Search, and especially enterprise search, is a hot topic,
as thought leaders and analysts try to figure out what the next big thing will be. In this month's
issue, NIE co-founder Mark Bennett gives you some insights into Search 2.0; we show you
ways to check your K2 collection health using the Windows Shell Host scripting language;
and Dr. Search discusses some of the potential issues around using enterprise search
software on network storage devices.
As always, feel free to contact us if you have any questions regarding enterprise search.
What's New - Spring 2006:
Autonomy announces Early Availability of K2 V7, a new independent Search Developer's
forum comes online, Stellent draws closer to FAST, and Alexa provides a service to let you
create your own private Google based solely on the sites you want to include.

Search 2.0 in the Enterprise: Moving Beyond "Single Shot" Relevancy:
How is today's Google like MS-DOS? It seems everyone is talking about 'Web 2.0'
and how the internet experience will improve as these new technologies, and
companies based on the technologies, come on line. Real thought leaders are
beginning to talk about 'Search 2.0' and how internet search engines like Yahoo,
Google, and MSN will evolve with Web 2.0. The main thing these internet search
engines want to do is to provide the better search of 'Search 2.0' is use what you
already have in your enterprise: context about your user. This month, we take a look
at the hype of web Search 2.0 and what we think it means in the
enterprise. [More].
Monitor K2 Collection Health with WSH Scripts:
One of our customers,
CaseShare Systems, has done more with
K2 than many companies, both with respect to the size of the
document collections - tens of millions of documents - and with
respect to the management tools they use to manage their collections.
This month CaseShare has allowed us to publish one of the
Windows Shell Host scripts they use to check the health of their
Verity K2 collections. We've modified the script to fit a general
environment, but we thought it might be useful for some of you as
you work with Verity K2 on Windows. And, if Autonomy can deliver
K2 V7 as seamlessly as they say, these scripts should be useful
even as the IDOL kernel swaps in under the K2 utilities.

Dr. Search: Using Enterprise Search on Network Storage Devices:
Many search vendors are wary of supporting collections on network storage
devices such as those from NetApp and EMC. Nonetheless, modern
appliances may address these concerns, and this month Dr. Search talks about
what you can do to insure the success of your project.
