Welcome to the Fall 2005 edition of Enterprise Search, a free subscription-based newsletter that addresses the technical obstacles that challenge webmasters, engineers, IT Professionals, and content owners as they implement search technology in corporations and organizations. Enterprise Search is published by New Idea Engineering at 5255 Stevens Creek Blvd. #189, Santa Clara, California 95051. I've provided information on subscribing and unsubscribing at the end of this newsletter.

Relevancy Tuning with Autonomy: This month, Chris Wildgoose of KnowldegeStream LLC from Boston, Massachusetts, has contributed an article about tuning relevance using Autonomy. Relevance tuning, or Query Cooking as we like to call it, is something we suggest to customers all the time. In his article,. Chris discusses ways to implement relevancy tuning using the primary information platform from Autonomy known as the IDOL Server. [More].

Rediscover the Poor Man's Entity Extraction in K2: The Verity Extraction is a powerful way to enhance search relevance by providing access to additional metadata that is often embedded in the text of corporate documents. But some people who have used Verity K2 and earlier products might remember the TDE capability that has been around since the earliest releases of Verity products in 1989. By using this capability, you can often implement a 'poor man's extractor' to locate phone numbers, department names, and other readily identifiable metadata, in any application that uses mkvdk. [More].

Search Analytics Corner: Search analytics is finally beginning to get the attention it deserves, and starting this month Mark Bennett, New Idea Engineering's co-founder, will write about various aspects of search analytics. This month he writes about the most basic component of knowing what your visitors are searching for: capturing the raw query. [More].

What's New - Fall 2005: A big month for news in enterprise search! Autonomy jumps to the forefront by acquiring Verity; DT Search goes enterprise; and New Idea Engineering returns to KMWorld for the third year in a row. [More].

Dr. Search: This month, Dr. Search discovers that the newest release of the Ultraseek XPA breaks the sample code we printed in January. After some homework and an anonymous tip from our own "deep code" contact, we've got the answer. Remember to contact Dr. Search with your questions at support@ideaeng.com. [More].
